Christmas Gift Ideas for Dads

Unlike mothers, fathers are kinda hard to buy presents for. This is especially true when you’re a girl and you want the best Christmas gift for your dad. When I married the hubby, I got another dad (his father) to think of when buying presents for every occasion there is.

Luckily for me, both my dad and the hubby’s dad are easy to please. My dad has always wanted the same thing for Christmas — clothes. So I just go with him to the mall and let him choose what kinds of clothes he wants for himself. As with my FIL, he is very fond of tools. You know, those screw drivers, pliers and stuff. He likes to collect them. So I might just browse through shopping sites like reid’s site that sells these stuff and hope I could find something there to give him on Christmas Day.

Weekend Guests

Since we only get to stay at our marital home in Bacoor during weekends (the perk of having parents living in Manila who let us sleep over their place during weekdays), it’s been sort of a normal thing for us to have weekend guests. I, however, only invite family members or close friends to join us for the weekend on occasions because I treasure our “couple time” so much. After all, we only get to play our respective roles as husband and wife freely and seriously at our marital home during weekends.

Last weekend, we had my parents as guests. Actually, the plan was to visit our family home in Naic for some general cleaning (my parents stay with my three unmarried siblings in Manila to take care of their household needs). The last time we were there to clean the house prior to this visit was around August so you could imagine how dusty and dirty it was when we arrived. After bringing back order and cleanliness there, we left immediately and headed to Bacoor to spend the rest of the weekend there.

Baking with Edel: How I Make Pancakes from Scratch

The hubby is a big pancake fan, and so are my mom and my FIL. I like pancakes, too, but not so much. If before, I would stock boxes of pancake mixes in our pantry to satisfy the hubby’s pancake cravings during weekends, now I just make pancakes from scratch.

I never thought making homemade pancakes was easy! It only requires a few ingredients and having a supply of them in your pantry means pancakes galore whenever you like. The hubby likes his pancakes with lotsa butter and maple syrup. I’m not a superwoman to produce homemade maple syrup so I just buy Clara Ole’s for less than P100 a bottle.

On Christmas Songs and Christmas Caroling

When I was a kid, I would join other kids in our neighbourhood to go Christmas caroling. Our Christmas songs were limited but we would always manage to impress people with our loud and cheery voices. They say children have the sweetest and most soothing voice, and I guess that’s what we had back then that allowed us to make other people happy and enjoy this wonderful Christmas tradition.

With my out-of-tune voice today, I’ve never really had the guts to join any Christmas carol group, or any singing group for that matter. I remember I was once invited by a friend to join her choir group but I declined. One time she even requested me to find her a guitar mini at musicians friend that she could use in singing with her group. She said guitars are your best friend when it comes to Christmas caroling. She was really passionate about singing and I really admire her for that.

Grouponing Again

I got hooked on groupon sites sometime in 2011. Back then, I would use my spare money buying vouchers from different merchants without hesitation. The distribution was like this: 80% food/restaurants, 10% household items and 10% beauty and pampering services. It was always a great feeling knowing I had saved a lot from all these purchases.

But then, not all merchants treated me well. While some merchants were good and delivered on their promise, there were those that didn’t live up to my expectations or were just pain in the a$% with their poor service. And I believe I share this same sentiment with other loyal groupon customers. It eventually came to a point when I lost interest in patronizing these groupon sites. I finally stopped grouponing in early 2012.

Cooking with Edel: 4-Ingredient Graham Balls

Dessert last weekend was courtesy of these giant balls of goodness that were ridiculously delicious yet utterly fattening. Eating just one ball didn’t do it for me. I ate a total of four balls in one sitting. I even had to restrain myself for consuming more. It was that addicting!

It was sweet, milky and chocolate-y, familiar flavors but with a twist. You only need four ingredients to make this dessert: crushed Graham crackers, condensed milk, Nips chocolate candies (or M&Ms if you have the money) and powdered milk. Just mix the first three ingredients together, shape the mixture into balls of your desired size (the bigger, the better) and roll ‘em balls over powdered milk. Put in the freezer (this is a must so you don’t end up with sticky balls) for 30 minutes or longer, then serve and enjoy.
