Crocheting with Edel: Multi-Purpose Crochet Rectangles

What to do with leftover yarns? Why not create something useful out of them by turning them into crochet rectangles? Crochet rectangles are multi-purpose (the bigger, the better) as they can be used as coasters, seat covers, dish cloths, and appliques. Or you could just put them on your side table or shelf as protective underlayer for the various kikay stuff you placed there on a regular basis. Isn’t that practical and dainty at the same time? I believe it is!

That’s why I decided that the leftover yarns from my chunky sweater and chevron cowl be used for this purpose.

Weekend Story: More Yarn Shopping + Dinner with My Godchildren

Last weekend was quite hectic. On Friday night, we had a family dinner at The Hashery, the newly-opened casual dining restaurant catering mostly to students in Sampaloc, Manila. On Saturday morning, I, accompanied by the hubby and Mame, did some yarn shopping in Rosario, Pasig (Gantsilyo Guru’s shop and Lacion Yarn Store). After that, we all went home in Bacoor with a stop-over at S&R Baclaran. I would be hosting a dinner for my godchildren that night and due to time constraints, I resorted to buying ready-to-eat food and some easy-to-prepare salad ingredients from there. (I just cooked pasta and rice when we got home.) While I was picking food items off the shelves, the hubby was buying new tires which he had the S&R tire center staff installed to our car.) We got back to Manila on Sunday afternoon as I had this work-related meeting to attend. The hubby biked to Roxas Blvd. while I was busy in the office. We would see each other again at night and I would start crocheting for a new project before going to bed.

It was another packed weekend for us. We had lots of fun and laughter and we felt productive at the same time. Here are photos from our weekend activities:

Crocheting with Edel: Zippered Crochet Pouch

This small old rose crochet pouch was borne out of my desire to use the leftover yarn from the chunky crochet sweater I made a few weeks back. One special thing about this pouch is the knitted “V” look which was inspired by the stitches used in this lovely cowl at All About Ami blog. Actually, if you’re gonna take a look at its interior/back side, the pattern made by the connecting knots is quite nice as well. Next time, I’ll make another pouch and use it as the exterior/front side. It’s going to be dainty!

Crocheting with Edel: Short Chevron Crochet Cowl

Crocheting can be addicting! I think I’m hooked. I like that it makes my imagination go wild and encourages me to be think better when it comes to making my crochet look good. If only I had plenty of time to crochet…hmmmm. Anyway, because I still have several skeins of yarn, I thought of something to do with it. Reading crochet blogs gives me tons of ideas. But given my yarn supplies at the moment, I can only do a few projects.

One weeknight, I watched this tutorial on You Tube about making chevron/zigzag/ripple effect on crochet and decided to make a short chevron cowl using Gantsilyo Guru Selections’ (pantone) blue and ivory milk cotton yarn and a 3.75mm (US 5) hook. The result was more than I hoped for!

Crocheting with Edel: Old Rose Chunky Crochet Sweater

I’ve always wanted to learn how to crochet. I got busy with adult life and the responsibilities that came with it but the urge to crochet was always there. One weekend, I finally had the time to buy crochet supplies and ask Mame to teach me how to do the basic stitches. She would work on a particular stitch and then I would imitate it until I get the hang of it. I also watched crochet tutorial videos on You Tube and that was when I found out the name of each stitch and technique that Mame taught me.

They say crocheting is not for everyone and I have to agree with that. It requires money, time, good eye sight, focus, discipline, and looooooots of patience. I may not have a sufficient supply of the other requirements, but I can say I have enough patience. I can be very patient when working with my hands to create something beautiful and functional. Crocheting allows me to do just that and more!
