Book Review: An A-Z Guide for a Green Chef by Annie Pascual-Guerrero

I got this book from my boss. As soon as she finished reading it, she immediately thought of giving it away to us. No one in the office wanted it, so I took it. I’d like to think our boss was just being generous (she always is). But I also couldn’t shake the thought that maybe, she just wanted more people to know about the wealth of knowledge found in the book. Whatever her reason was, I’m glad she shared this book with me.

Annie Pascual-Guerrero is the founder of Center for Culinary Arts, the pioneer culinary school in the Philippines. Aside from being a culinary expert, she is also an environmentalist. Her book titled “An A-Z Guide for a Green Chef” teaches chefs and non-chefs alike on how to go green in the kitchen. I liked how she sounded in the book because you could really feel her staunch advocacy on the preservation of the environment which, according to her, starts in the kitchen (at home or in commercial/industrial ones).

Farewell, Tita Lourdes!

During my college years, I experienced living with relatives to save on resources and eventually, out of necessity. You see, I grew up in the province and my family didn’t have a house in Manila where the university was. I survived college with the help, both emotionally and financially, of relatives. One of them is my uncle Roy who is my dad’s younger brother.

Tito Roy used to live in Bacoor, Cavite with her wife Lourdes. They had a bakery then. I spent my freshman and sophomore days under their roof. In exchange for their kindness to accommodate me in their house, I helped in their bakery every weekday after school and during weekends when I had no classes.

Positive Vibes

I just realized that there are tons of things that make me happy. Well, actually, it’s our choice to be happy. We may be presented with people, things or events that could bring happiness to us but if we wouldn’t look at it as such, happiness would elude us. I guess it’s all a matter of having positive attitude and spreading positive vibes.

For my own interest and satisfaction, allow me to share the following things that make me happy at present:

1. a loving husband
2. a caring family and an equally caring in-laws
3. a problem and trouble-free job
4. reading books
5. chatting with friends on FB
6. sharing photos and interacting with friends on Instagram
7. eating healthy
8. going to the gym with friends who value health and fitness as much (or sometimes as little, haha) as I do
9. blog hopping

Health Matters

I just found out that a friend has to undergo surgery because of a myoma or fibroid that grew in her uterus. Hearing news like this scares the hell out of me. I used to be afraid of doctors and going to hospitals but I have overcome the fear over time. But still, I can’t help but be paranoid about my own health when I hear other people sharing something negative about their health.

I am particularly concerned with my reproductive health. When I landed my first job, I started scheduling a trip to the OB-Gyne for my annual check-up. This includes breast exam, pap smear and vaginal ultrasound to identify any growths or abnormalities in my reproductive system. So far, the only thing they have spotted inside my uterus was a growing fetus and that surely made me very happy (yes, despite the saddening outcome in the end).

Sunday in Tagaytay

I will never get tired of going to Tagaytay. Ever. It’s such a great place for some chilling out, sight-seeing, and of course, food-tripping. Yesterday, the hubby and I, along with my SIL, drove up to the country’s second summer capital and had so much fun. We had brunch at Mushroomburger and desserts was at the famous Bag of Beans.

Sunday in Tagaytay is always busy. Families flock to the place to bond and unwind. There was no traffic yesterday, though, which was a good thing. Because my SIL hasn’t gone to The Cliffhouse yet, we took her there and as we had suspected, there were a lot of people strolling around and the parking slots were full. We parked outside the nearby Yellow Cab and Army Navy instead and sneakily crossed over The Cliffhouse so my SIL could take a look around the place while we enjoyed the view and took pictures. Haha.

A New Toy!

This may be the happiest Valentine week for me ever because finally, we’ve gotten an iPad mini! I started bugging the hubby about it when February arrived and it was only on Valentine’s Day that he agreed we buy one. I’m so happy!

Now I know why I didn’t get flowers from him last Thursday. Wait, does it really have to be like that? I should have received both! Just kidding. I’d like to think the iPad mini is the best Valentine gift we could give each other. I mean, it’s not just for me, it’s for us. We’re gonna use it both. Conjugal property. Mutual happiness? Achieved!
