Music Then and Now

In our family, I think I’m just the only one who is not musically-inclined. Among the six of us, it’s just my dad and my youngest sister who have musical talents. The rest are just music fans.

I remember my dad used to share stories about his stint as the guitar guy at church. He said the music then was light and mellow unlike today’s music that’s loud and rough. Back then, they used affordable mpc renaissance that powered up their sound system and helped produce great music for their choir group. Now, everything is digital. As long as you have the resources like PC and internet connection, you can make your own music and even share it with the world.

When is the Time to Help? NOW!

Now, more than ever, is the time to help our fellow Filipinos in the Visayas who have been affected by the recent calamities. Any kind of help is crucial but it’s still best to give what you already have at hand. It doesn’t have to be big or small, cheap or expensive, as long as it’s appropriate, it’s good enough.

Some people prefer to give cash as it’s more convenient to do while others choose to give stuff like clothes, water and food. There are others, though, who want to give their time and energy by joining relief and rehabilitation efforts. No matter what kind of help you give, as long as it comes from your generous heart, God (and the calamity victims) will surely appreciate it.

Saving While Shopping

As a self-confessed cheapskate and a trying-hard frugal person, I try to stick to my budget every time I’m out shopping for our home, my husband or myself. I admit to doing impulsive shopping on occasions, though. But then, I still make sure that I get full value for my money.

The idea of saving while shopping thrills me. Promos like buy 1 take 1, up to 70% off and the likes appeal to me like they’re some sort of pampering services waiting to be enjoyed. It must be due to the fact that I always challenge myself not just to stick to my budget but if possible, spend less than what I intended to as well.

Dining Out with Family and Friends

If there’s one thing I’m good at, that would be eating. Food has always been my passion. I love it more than my husband. Haha. Just kidding. Actually, the hubby and I have one common denominator – food. We love to eat good food. We also love to try out new restaurants whenever we could afford it.

While we enjoy dining at home (with me cooking for the hubby all the time if it’s just the two of us), we are fond of dining out, too. We visit restaurants with family and friends. If it’s with the hubby’s family, it’s almost always a bonding activity. If it’s with my side of the family, it’s normally a post-shopping agenda. If the dining out is with friends, it’s either a group reunion, a birthday blow-out or a mini get-together.

Restful Weekend

For the hubby and I, every weekend is different. Sometimes it’s quiet, sometimes it’s fun. Sometimes it’s tiring, sometimes it’s restful. Sometimes it’s dull, sometimes it’s playful. Sometimes it’s a combination of any two or all.

One factor that affects how our weekends turn out is the people we get to spend them with. The activities we do during weekends are almost the same, but it’s the people we do these activities with that make them more special and memorable.

Cooking with Edel: Cheesy Corned Beef

Canned goods are my life saver. Whenever I’m not in the mood to do some serious cooking, like I was tonight, I turn to canned goods for immediate relief. One of my faves is Purefoods Corned Beef. Compared to other corned beef brands, it has chunkier meat and the quality is better.

Normally, I just sauté corned beef with onions for some stir-fried goodness or add some potatoes and water for a saucy and filling corned beef dish. Earlier in the kitchen, though, instead of just sautéing it with onions, I added some syrup to help caramelize the onions (honey is better), some garlic, some fresh tomatoes and quickmelt cheese. It was based from a recipe featured in a blog post I saw somewhere (sorry, I can’t seem to locate the site now). I also added some black pepper and dried oregano, just before turning off the heat, for more flavor. No need to add salt anymore because the corned beef is already loaded with sodium and the cheese is already salty on its own.
