First Salary

Last Thursday was a happy time for my side of the family. My sister N, a new member of the Philippine labor force, finally received her first salary. The salary was supposed to get into her brand new and shiny ATM on August 7 but due to the bad weather, it was delayed by two days. But my sister didn’t mind at all; she was more overwhelmed with the fact that she now earns a living! Yipee!

Between my brother D and and my sister N, the latter is more mature when it comes to handling finances. As soon as she withdrew the money from her ATM, she divided it immediately to where they should go. She gave my mom some money and our sister J, too. She even allotted money to buy new clothes for herself, a leather repair kit for our old sofa (as requested by dad), and some groceries.

How to Donate Cash to the Red Cross

Yesterday morning, the sun already showed up at my side of Manila. I couldn’t help but let out a big sigh of relief when I saw it myself. I dunno but the mere sight of the rising sun felt like the “spring of hope” to me, if you know what I mean.

I know at this moment, a lot of Filipinos are trying hard to rebuild their (homes and) lives and move forward after the terrible August 7 flooding. Help is still very much encouraged. In fact, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), along with many other charitable organizations, is still accepting donations in cash and in kind. Here’s how we can donate cash donations to the Red Cross through our mobile phones (saw this in my Facebook timeline last night):

Suprises from Old and New

Peeking into my old closet last night when I visited my siblings’ place, I found some old clothes that still fit me (now that I’m preggy and big!) and some others that I could definitely fit into after my baby bump is gone. I was surprised by how much clothes I’ve accumulated all these years and how most of them I haven’t been able to use for a long time.

While looking for my work shoes this morning under our bed, I saw some shopping bags that had shoe boxes inside. I opened one and was surprised to see two brand new pair of shoes that I already forgot I had bought before. I opened another one and saw a pair of knee braces that the hubby bought during those times when he was still using his motorcycle frequently. I texted him about it and he was also surprised he had them. Now he plans to give them away to his motorcycle-rider cousin.

Heavy Rains and Flooding in Manila

The heavy rains and flooding experienced in the whole of Metro Manila and nearby provinces the past days were due to the nasty Southwest moonsoon and typhoon Haiku. As expected, thousands of families have been displaced and several millions’ worth of properties have been destroyed. In this time of tribulation, I can only pray for the safety and fast recovery of my fellow countrymen.

I’m thankful to God that our families got spared from this calamity. That we only got to experience the flood outside of our homes and not inside of them. That we had enough food and clothing to warm our bodies. That we have survived this ordeal brought about by the forces of nature scot-free. We really are vulnerable to this kind of destruction and we can only do so much to protect ourselves. During times like this, everything is controlled by God so the only thing we can do is to entrust our lives to Him.

My Wants, Then and Now

Prior to my pregnancy, I had so many things going on in my mind. You see, I just got married a few months ago. I had domestic skills but thought it wasn’t enough to please my husband when we’d start to finally live together under one roof. I wanted to be a good wife.

I also wanted things for myself, for my growth as a person. I wanted to get an MA degree or take up law. I wanted to get into sewing and other crafts. I even wanted to grow my entrepreneurial skills by putting up a retail shop and visiting mfried.com for retail store fixtures. You know, things that a lot of women normally want for themselves.

Rainy Day Hassles

Oh how I hate rainy days! It makes me sleep longer than I should. It makes me too lazy to go to work. It makes my mood as gloomy as the weather. It makes me wanna eat more than I have eaten on normal days.

And now that I’m pregnant, the rainy day hassles continue to plague me. It’s actually worse this time. I have to be extra careful especially when I’m on the street when roads get wet and slippery. I cannot afford to slip on the pavement by accident and hurt my unborn baby unintentionally.
