The Shift to Brown Rice

Last Friday, which was a holiday (Chinese New Year), we unofficially shifted to brown or unpolished rice. All our meals last weekend, except for our Friday dinner where we had unlimited dimsum at Kung Fu Kitchen in The District Imus, included brown rice. It was a mutual decision for the hubby and me (though I’d admit I had bugged him about it until he realized I had a point) and so far, we’re enjoying it.

In the three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) we consumed brown rice, I noticed that it made me full longer. I also liked it’s texture. The cooked grains are firm but not too hard to chew. It’s like I’m eating fried rice (I love fried rice of all kinds!) except that it’s not oily at all. And another thing, brown rice is more “raised” or maalsa than your regular white rice. That’s economical because it means you get more cooked rice at a lesser amount of grains.

Self-Imposed Shopping Ban

Note: I started my self-imposed shopping ban on January 1, 2014. I made it official online through this post, and called it a “shopping fast.” I also shared there the reasons why I took the challenge and laid down some rules to guide me while on it. I decided to include this post in my documentation and labeled it as my January report

If there’s one thing I’m really proud of last month, that would be the fact that I didn’t do any retail therapy. Of course, I did dine out with the hubby and shop for groceries but that was all. I was able to stop myself from indulging in the big 3’s of girl shopping: clothes, shoes, and accessories. It’s a feat on its own, I tell you.

I hope to continue this self-imposed shopping ban as long as I can. It will not only save me money, but it will also teach me to have more discipline and be more in control of my finances. I can imagine the next months will be harder because of the regular mall-wide sales and the various special occasions approaching (e.g. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc.), but I will work on it.

Job Leads

My sister Jodie is graduating from college in a few months. While she works part time and already earns her own money, my two other siblings and I still help her occasionally when school expenses pile up.

Just the other day, she was telling me about how the restaurant where she works part-time allows her to meet potential employers. Like one time, she said a guest who’s a manager from the Bangko Sentral adviced her to apply for a job there as soon as she receives her diploma. She’s taking up Banking and Finance, that’s why.

Year of the Pig Forecast for 2014

I was born in the year of the pig. I don’t know much about this and I don’t care much, either. Last Sunday, however, I got hold of a copy of the Star Week (the Sunday mag of the Philippine Star broadsheet) featuring the individual forecasts for the different animal signs under the Chinese zodiac.

While I don’t generally believe in predictions or astrologers for that matter, I thought reading what’s in store for me this year wouldn’t hurt. So I read it and found out some good “possibilities” and “realities” that may apply to me.
