Self-Imposed Shopping Ban

Note: I started my self-imposed shopping ban on January 1, 2014. I made it official online through this post, and called it a “shopping fast.” I also shared there the reasons why I took the challenge and laid down some rules to guide me while on it. I decided to include this post in my documentation and labeled it as my January report

If there’s one thing I’m really proud of last month, that would be the fact that I didn’t do any retail therapy. Of course, I did dine out with the hubby and shop for groceries but that was all. I was able to stop myself from indulging in the big 3’s of girl shopping: clothes, shoes, and accessories. It’s a feat on its own, I tell you.

I hope to continue this self-imposed shopping ban as long as I can. It will not only save me money, but it will also teach me to have more discipline and be more in control of my finances. I can imagine the next months will be harder because of the regular mall-wide sales and the various special occasions approaching (e.g. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc.), but I will work on it.

Job Leads

My sister Jodie is graduating from college in a few months. While she works part time and already earns her own money, my two other siblings and I still help her occasionally when school expenses pile up.

Just the other day, she was telling me about how the restaurant where she works part-time allows her to meet potential employers. Like one time, she said a guest who’s a manager from the Bangko Sentral adviced her to apply for a job there as soon as she receives her diploma. She’s taking up Banking and Finance, that’s why.

Year of the Pig Forecast for 2014

I was born in the year of the pig. I don’t know much about this and I don’t care much, either. Last Sunday, however, I got hold of a copy of the Star Week (the Sunday mag of the Philippine Star broadsheet) featuring the individual forecasts for the different animal signs under the Chinese zodiac.

While I don’t generally believe in predictions or astrologers for that matter, I thought reading what’s in store for me this year wouldn’t hurt. So I read it and found out some good “possibilities” and “realities” that may apply to me.

New Zumba Instructor

As I’ve said in my previous post, we have a new zumba instructor. If before, we had a gay one, now we have a girl. She’s a student. When we had a little chitchat during one of our water breaks, I found out she’s on her final year in college taking up HRM.

We call our zumba instructor by the name of Tyn. Teaching zumba is her part-time job. Somehow, she reminds me of myself when I was still in college as I used to work part-time, too, to support my studies. It started on my third year. Back then, I really had to do it because my father had lost his job. But I digress.

Zumba-ing Again

I stopped doing zumba the second half of last year because I got too busy at work. Okay, make that “I got lazy.” Actually, not so lazy because even if I didn’t do as much zumba as I could, I was able to lose weight and that says a lot about my level of discipline and determination, right? Haha.

Anyway, two weeks ago, I started zumba-ing again. Just like last year, our little zumba club does it every Tuesday and Thursday. We still use the same venue and the same old sound system though I think it would be cool if we could use something like a stagepas 500 at guitar center for a nicer-sounding music. But that’s just me.

La Milagrosa’s Famous Sotanghon

Aside from the well-conducted lectures and the fun discussions, what I remember most about the 3-day seminar I finished yesterday was the food. You see, we were provided with three delicious meals per day and they were all prepared and served to us by La Milagrosa, one of the well-known caterers in Manila.

As a food lover, I eat almost everything served to me. There are just a few dishes that I’m not a fan of and one of them is sotanghon. I don’t like it both as soup and as a noodle dish. La Milagrosa’s sotanghon, however, made me a convert. Their sotanghon (the noodle dish) was very good. It was very simple as it only had chicken strips, some mushroom and garlic bits as toppings. Boy, was it so delicious! The sotanghon noodles were firm and were tasty and flavorful in itself. The toppings were just a bonus.
